“No-listen, I didn't mean-”
“-to call me Mudblood? But you call everyone of my birth Mudblood Severus. Why should I be any different?”
He struggled on the verge of speech , but with a contemptuous look she turned and climbed back through the portrait hole…
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Severus stumbled back until his back hit the wall directly opposite the Fat Lady's portrait. He slid down to the floor, brought his knees up to his chest, wrapped his arms around his knees, and laid his forehead on his knees. Tears rolled down his cheeks, slowly and one at a time at first, but soon they came more frequent. He had just lost his best friend, whom he had fallen in love with. He was so lost in thought and full of emotions that he unconsciously began to sing softly, which grew louder starting with the third verse.
You know I love you
You're the one thing I have that's true
My life used to be nothing to me
I never want to feel that again
If you go away girl
You're taking my heart with you
If you go away girl
You'll be breaking my heart in two
If you only stay girl
I promise you the world
So please don't ever go away
You know I need you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
You are everything good in my life
Your tears have finally opened my eyes
If you go away girl
You're taking my heart with you
If you go away girl
You'll be breaking my heart in two
If you only stay girl
I promise you the world
So please don't ever go away
I was so wrong to ever look at another baby
Even the strongest man can stumble and fall
And I'll do anything for you
Anything to be in your arms again
Baby don't let this be the end
%%% INSIDE THE GRYFFINDOR COMMON ROOM
Mary and Lily were still in the Common Room. Lily wasn't ready to head to the dorms. She was still angry and knew she couldn't go to sleep when she was angry.
“So, you told him off?” Mary asked.
“Yes. He's probably left already.”
“Good for you. If you didn't leave him, he would've dragged you into the Dark Arts with him.”
“Maybe.”
They were quiet for a little, and Mary could just barely make out Severus's voice from outside the Common Room. “He's still out there.”
“I'll get rid of him.”
“Good for you.”
“Go upstairs, and I'll join you when I'm done.”
Mary went upstairs, and Lily sighed and stood, walking toward the Fat Lady's portrait. She paused before the portrait would open. She could hear Severus, and he was singing.
Girl I just can't live without you
Never, ever leave me girl
You promised your love to me forever
Say you'll never leave me girl
Say you'll never leave me girl
Say you'll never leave me girl
Say you'll never leave me girl
Say you'll never leave me girl
The song was so full of sadness and heartbreak that Lily felt remorse for how she treated Severus. She climbed out the portrait hole and froze. The scene in front of her broke her heart. Severus was sitting against the wall with his knees drawn up to his chest, his arms wrapped around his legs, and his forehead resting on his knees. A tear slid down her cheek. She whispered, “Sev.”
His head snapped up, and he stared at her, half afraid and half hopeful.
“I'm sorry, Sev.”
Those words held so much meaning for Severus. He stood up and asked hesitantly, “Friends?”
Lily nodded, and they hugged. Severus knew he could never act on his crush, but he had his best friend back and that's all that mattered to him.
