Volley of Languages

Disclaimer: I don't own anything, except for the facts of Lily speaking Spanish and Severus speaking Japanese.

Author's Note: This is a companion piece to Family Ties. You don't have to read that story first, but this one shot goes with it.

“Konnichi wa, Lily-chan, Remus-kun.”

“Hola, Severus, Remus.”

“Hello, Severus, Lily.” Remus glanced at his Slytherin and Gryffindor friends. “What languages are you two speaking?”

“Japanese.”

“Spanish.”

“Why?”

“It's my mother's native language. My sister learned it and I picked it up from her.”

“My father speaks Spanish at his job, and I learned it to help him keep up with the language.” Lily turned to Severus. “Why would you choose to learn Japanese? Spanish is much easier.”

“Ah, but Japanese is more elegant.”

“Patético."

A mischievous glint appeared in Severus's eyes. “Baka.”

A glint that mirrored the one in Severus's eyes appeared in Lily's. “Idiota.”

“Damu.”

“Inepto.”

“Futsutsuka.”

“Desarreglado.”

“Shiyounonbai.”

“Espantoso.”

“Asamashii.”

“Terrero.”

“Jaaku.”

“Horroroso.”

“Seizetu.”

“Antipático."

“Omoiyari.”

“Insociable.”

“Jiko-chūshin."

“Feo.”

“Okorippoi.”

“Maleducado.”

“Atsukamashii.”

“Tener malas pulgas.”

“Kichigai-jimita.”

“Engreído."

“Omae was korosu.”

During this exchange, Remus kept turning his head toward the speaker, which was giving him a headache. He didn't know what was being said, and he didn't like it. He was about to break it up, when Lily and then Severus burst out laughing.

“That was fun,” Severus said between laughs.

“Yes, it was. You'll have to tell me the translations,” Lily agreed.

“Same goes for you, Lily.”

“Well, we all have a study period right now, so we could all go to the library,” Remus suggested.

“I think Remus wants to know what we said too,” Lily put in.

“Let's go then,” Severus decided. The three friends made their way to the library and claimed a table as far from prying eyes as they could.

“So, how do we start?”

“Well, Lily, seeing as you began, you should start as we'll have the “argument” again, but this time in English,” Severus mentioned.

“Okay...Pathetic.”

“Idiot.”

“Idiotic.”

“Dumb.”

“Inept.”

“Incompetent.”

“Unkempt.”

“Hopelesss.”

“Appallimg.”

“Despicable.”

“Vile.”

“Wicked.”

“Hideous.”

“Ghastly.”

“Unpleasant.”

“Inconsiderate.”

“Unsociable.”

“Self-centered.”

“Ugly.”

“Temperamental.”

“Bad-mannered.”

“Impudent.”

“Bad-tempered.”

“Crazy.”

“Conceited.”

“I will kill you.”

Remus gave a soft, low whistle. “I take it back. I don't want to know the translations.”

“Too late,” Lily replied, and the three of them laughed softly.
